Study intakes in Australia

Australia generally has two intakes in a year.

Intake 1: It commences in February and is the primary intake

Intake 2: It commences in July.

So, students planning to study in Australia have to apply for an Australia Student visa under Subclass 500.

Course Duration Australia Student Visa Validity
Longer than 10 months and ending in November/ December For Instance, your course ends December 2021, your visa would be valid until March 15, 2022.
Longer than 10 months but finishing between January and October Your visa would be valid for two months longer than the duration of your course. For eg. the course ends in Feb 2022, your student visa would be granted until April 2022.
10 months or less Your visa will be valid for one month longer than the duration of your course.

  • Work for up to 40 hours every two weeks during the course

Eligibility requirements for an Australia student visa

You have to meet the basic visa requirements to be eligible for Australia Student Visa. These include:

  • Enroll for a Full-time Study Course
  • Prove that you are a Genuine Temporary Entrant

  • Provide proof of good character
  • Proof of funds to cover your course fees, travel, and living costs

New English Language Requirements announced for Temporary Graduate Visa and Student Visa 

The Australian Government introduced new English language requirements for Temporary Graduate Visa and student visa. The changes were announced as a part of the Migration Strategy released on December 11, 2023. The new language requirements are applicable for applications submitted on or after March 23, 2024.

Step 1: Check your eligibility: Before submitting your Australia Student Visa application, you must check your eligibility.

Step 2: Gather all the requirements: You have to gather all the visa requirements as per the checklist.

Processing time for Australia student visa

The time for processing of Australian Student Visa is generally four weeks. You can apply for the visa four months before your course starts, and travel to the country three months before your course starts.

An Australian student visa permits you to bring close family members as dependents through your student visa. The dependents are:

  • A spouse or a partner who you have lived with for 12 months.
  • Your children below 18 years old or who are still studying in schools

It should be noted that the work rights permitted for the dependent partner depends on the course opted by the student:

An undergraduate degree allows the dependent partner to work for 40 hours each fortnight.

A post-graduate degree or a doctorate degree permits the partner to work for unlimited hours.

Post-study work stream

Post-Study Work stream grants post-study work rights to international students who have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral degree in Australia. They can work in the country for two to four years to gain international work experience.

Graduate work stream

Students can also work under the Graduate Work Stream. They are eligible for this stream if they have graduated with the skills and occupations related to a career in the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). This visa is valid for 18 months.

*Note: You can apply for these no later than six months after completing your course in Australia.
