The issues with IRCC operations

There have been long delays in the processing of applications for Canada immigration. Currently, there are 2.7 million potential immigrants waiting for the finalization of their Canada PR applications.

The delays in application processing in fact were aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, these delays were considered unacceptable by the Government of Canada, which led to the constitution of a task force.

The solutions

The good news is that the Task Force has provided solutions for the issues plaguing IRCC operations. The tool provided to applicants to find out the average processing time taken by IRCC has been revised. This gives Canada immigration applicants a realistic estimate of the time taken for the processing of visa applications.

Sean Frazer, the Minister of Immigration in Canada that by the end of the year 2022, most of the immigration service standards will be met. For this, and more, the number of people at work in the process as well as technology spending and modernization will be increased.

To deal with the record-breaking rise in the number of Canada visa applications, the task force has proposed that more passport pick-up points be established. New ones of these will be made available at places including Quebec, Ontario, Marie, Sault Ste, Trois-Rivières, Prince Edward Island, Charlottetown, and Alberta.

In fact, there are 20 passport pick-up points under the suggestions of the Task Force. At these points, applications for passports would be processed in 9 to 10 working days.

There will also be a simplified renewal procedure made available to Canadians who are in need of renewed passports.

In place of mailing citizenship proof or finding a guarantor, the new procedure makes things easy for applicants. It only needs them to submit the application form, 2 references, 2 photos, and fees from individuals deemed eligible. These are people whose passports have met their expiry for less than 15 years and have been stolen, lost, or damaged.

People will benefit from Canada’s long-term solutions in the plan. The Task Force will be exploring options to enable people to submit online applications. The Task Force is also planning to enable more than 300 Service Canada centers. These centers will be tasked with the processing of passport applications.

The Canadian government has already done an investment of CAD85 million in the 2021 Fiscal and Economic Update to facilitate minimizing the immigration application backlog. The money will also be put to use to solve long wait times for Canada immigration.

A large portion of this budget has been employed in hiring 500 new passport officers and 319 Citizen Services Officers. The Canadian government is also retraining existing staff from other agencies in the federal government. They will be put to work to process passports.
