Overview of Canada Immigration in 2024

The IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) is coming up with new changes in plans and policies that will come into effect in 2024. As per the announcement of the Immigration Levels Plan 2024-2026, 485,000 PRs will be issued this year.

The country is also set to launch new updates on different immigration programs using AI to streamline the application process and client interaction.

Major updates on Canada Immigration programs

Given below are the updates that the four Immigration programs are yet to receive:

Express Entry Updates

The IRCC announced category-based Express Entry draws in 2023 to help shortlist skilled foreign nationals to address the country's labor scarcity situation.

During the first year of the category-based Express Entry program, the IRCC primarily focused on:

  • Candidates with French language proficiency
  • Candidates with recent work experience in STEM, Healthcare, Trades, Transport, and Agriculture/Agri-food.

The six categories for the category-based Express Entry draws will be re-assessed and altered according to the labor market requirements. A new group of immigrants will be able to migrate to Canada via the category-based draws.

Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) Regulations

The Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) pathway is one of the immigration pathways that allow provincial governments to pick candidates that best suit their labor requirements. The latest Immigration Levels Plan reports the PNP program to be one of the most contributing immigrant contributors.

Multi-year PNP plans will be implemented in 2024, which will authorize territories and provinces to plan their strategies for 2025.

Admissions of the Parents and Grandparents Program

In 2023, Canada welcomed 285,000 immigrants through the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP). The PGP aims to invite 32,000 candidates via the latest Immigration Levels Plan.

The IRCC will also take measures to manage the application inputs, allowing more PGP candidates to migrate to Canada.

Canada’s International Student Program

IRCC recently launched an LOA (Letter of Acceptance) system that will verify and examine the applications for the study permit.

Starting from December 2023, the DLIs (Designated Learning Institutions) in Canada began confirming every applicant's LOA directly with the IRCC to avoid fraudulent applications.

The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) program will also be reviewed and improved to suit and align with the labor market needs and Francophone immigration targets.

Other Important Changes to Canada’s Immigration

Some of the other significant changes that are to be made to the Canada Immigration in 2024 are as follows:

New Advisory Board of the IRCC

The IRCC will set up a new advisory board to address matters related to service delivery and immigration policies specifically.

The new advisory board will strengthen the policies and develop the existing program.

Increased use of Technology & AI

The IRCC is keen on using AI and technology to upgrade Canada's immigration system.

Some of the ways the digital transformation will benefit immigration are as follows:

  • Improves the service standards
  • Strengthens collaborations with employers
  • Make applications user-friendly with the advanced user interface.
