You must be aware that Australia is in need of many skilled foreign workers to fill their job positions and help develop their industries and economy. Hence, the country has various skilled visas to offer which are meant for professionals who are skilled in specific areas of work to migrate and work in Australia. Here are some of the visas that are accessible to those who possess the qualification to work in a skilled occupation deemed eligible in Australia.
  • Subclass 189 - Skilled Independent visa
  • Subclass 190 - Skilled Nominated visa
  • Subclass 491 - Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa
As you can see, these visas have specific implications as regards the manner in which you will be invited to apply for them. The Skilled Independent Visa doesn’t need you to obtain sponsorship from any Australian state/territory. The Skilled Nominated Visa needs you to be nominated by an Australian state/territory though you don’t need to obtain a job offer from an Australian employer. Then there’s the Skilled Work Regional visa which requires you to give a commitment to live and work in a certain region in Australia though you don’t need a sponsorship from an Australian employer to apply. Criteria for eligibility for Australia Skilled Visas in 2022

You must receive an invitation/nomination to apply You must be invited to apply for the skilled visa either by the Australian government directly (Subclass 189) or get a nomination from the government of a state/territory before getting invited (Subclass 190, Subclass 491). You have to in any case first submit an EOI to show your desire to apply for the visa. You must get your skills assessed by a competent body To lodge a valid application, you must make a declaration that you had a suitable skills assessment when you receive the invitation. A copy of the skills assessment has to be attached with the application for a visa. It’s necessary that the assessment of skills has been done within 3 years before your date of invitation. In case your skills were assessed for a shorter period, you must ensure that such period of time has not passed. If the assessment of your skills was based on a qualification you got in Australia as a student visa holder, such qualification has to be from pursuing a course with CRICOS registration. You must be of acceptable age Your age must not exceed 45 years at the time you are invited to apply for the visa. Even if you turn 45 after you are issued the invitation to apply, you will be considered eligible. You have to get the minimum score required At the time of submitting your EOI in SkillSelect, you will be able to ascertain the total points you could score based on the claims you have made in your application. With a score below 65 points, you won’t be eligible to receive an invitation to apply for the visa. The number of points you require to be eligible for the visa will be stated in the invitation sent to you. This required score could be even above 65. It will be based on the claims you made in the EOI. You must obtain a certain level of English language proficiency While receiving an invitation to apply for the visa, you must have competent English in the least to be eligible for application. You must be in a skilled occupation that’s deemed eligible The occupation you are active in must be on the list of eligible skilled occupations considered relevant for the visa. You must meet health and character requirements It’s necessary for you and any family member included in the application to meet the health requirements for visa eligibility. In some instances, even family members who aren’t accompanying you to Australia may be required to meet the health requirements. Also, you and family members with a minimum age of 16 years included in the application for a visa have to meet our character requirement. Those members of your family who aren’t accompanying you to Australia also have to meet the character requirement. You must clear any debt to be paid back to the Australian government In case you or any member of your family (also the ones who aren’t included in the visa application) owe money to the Government of Australia, you or they are obliged to pay back or arranged to pay back such payables. You must sign the Australian values statement As an applicant aged 18 years or more, you must:
  • have read or have been explained about Australian life, and
  • affirm that you will respect the Australian way of life and be obedient to the laws of Australia laws at the time of signing an Australian Values Statement.
You mustn’t have a history of visa cancellation/refusal in Australia It may be necessary that you don’t have a history of cancellation/refusal of visa while you were in Australia earlier.
