Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)

An eTA is a document required by candidates from visa-exempt countries who wish to travel to Canada. However, an eTA is only required for candidates traveling to Canada by air and belonging to the visa-exempt countries.

Types of Travelers Visiting Canada

The four major types of travelers visiting Canada are as follows:

 

Travelers that require an eTA

Visa-exempt foreign nationals: Required for individuals traveling via air or transiting through an airport.

 

Travelers that require an eTA

Citizens from select visa-required countries also qualify to apply for an eTA if they wish to travel to Canada via air.  

 

Travelers who cannot apply for an eTA

• Citizens of Canada, including dual citizenship, will require a valid passport.
• The permanent residents of Canada need a valid PR card or PR travel document.
