As a part of the Digital Border Initiative, the UK is planning an entire shift of immigration status documents by replacing physical biometric cards with e-visas. By 2025, the UK will discontinue Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) and Biometric Residence Cards (BRCs) and digitalize all immigration status documents.
Non-EU residents in the UK, including immigrants, students, workers and their dependents, use BRPs as proof of their immigration status. BRPs contain cryptographically verifiable chips that Border Force officers use to verify the authenticity of a person's identity.

The Home Office is to discontinue BRPS entirely from January 01, 2025, and all BRPS issued to date are to expire on December 31, 2024. The UK's official government website states that immigrants will not require a BRP from January 01 as they can prove their immigration status online.
The Permanent Residents of the UK with "Indefinite Leave to Remain or immigrants with an immigration status valid beyond December 31 will remain unaffected by the recent changes.
