Trudeau's new announcement on latest US-Canada border status

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced the joint decision by Canada and the US to extend the border restrictions at the US-Canada border till June 21. This is a part of the monthly renewal of Canada immigration’s border decisions with the US.

The border between the two countries will be open only for essential travel. The step to extend the border restriction was made in the interest of the health of people in both countries. This is considering the prevention of COVID-19.

Essential travel, as defined by Canada, includes such travel that is non-optional and non-discretional. Canada has a list of people who can enter the country, which includes:

• Approved permanent residents who have been approved before March 18, 2020
• International students who carried a valid study permit before March 16, 2020
• Temporary foreign workers
• Permanent residents
• Canadian citizens

Immediate family members are also allowed to enter the country from the US.
