The Premier of Canada’s Ontario province made the announcement about opening a free COVID-19 testing facility at the Pearson airport for international travelers. These travelers must be arriving in the province to stay in Canada for at least 14 days.
This pilot project was started on January 6, 2021, with the intention of stopping the COVID-19 pandemic from spreading into Ontario. The program will enable tracking of COVID-19 infections at an early stage and isolate them so that better protection can be ensured. Travelers including Canada PRs, international students, and TFWs migrating to Canada will get the advantage of this facility.
Those eligible can either pre-register or plan to get the test done upon arrival in Canada at the airport. The participants will get a self-collected PCR for free. He/she will be monitored in-person or via video by a healthcare provider as they administer the test themselves. There will be a dedicated area set for the purpose in the airport.
The test results will be made available within 48 hours of taking it. If the result turns positive, the OLIS and public health units will follow up. It’s also to be noted that the test won’t take away the requirement of mandatory quarantine for travelers arriving in Canada, even if the result is negative.
A similar screening pilot project has already been launched at the Calgary airport in Alberta which has been very successful. Like the Calgary project, the Pearson facility will also continue further to extend its advantages.
