QS World University Rankings are released every year. In the 2022 edition, QS considers various aspects of the universities and other educational institutions.

  • the way they deliver courses,
  • how courses have been revamped,
  • what they foresee in the future.

Said to be the largest-ever rankings for world universities, The QS World University Rankings 2022 features 1,300 educational institutions in its rankings to give what it says is comprehensive global coverage, to provide students an essential reference for allowing them to choose for themselves the best universities globally.

In the QS World University Rankings 2022, the top-ranking university in the world is the Massachusetts Institute of Technology [MIT]. In the second place is the University of Oxford. Tied in third place are the University of Cambridge and Stanford University. Harvard University ranks fifth. Other educational institutions in the top ten are California Institute of Technology [Caltech], Imperial College London, ETH Zurich – Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, University College London [UCL], and University of Chicago.

How are educational institutions ranked by QS?

The approach followed by QS for ranking takes into consideration the following aspects.

  •      An annual survey determines Academic Reputation by seeking responses from 130,000 academics. Weightage given to this aspect is 40%.
  •       Faculty to Student ratio– this takes into account the number of pedagogical staff per the number of students at an educational institution. If the number of teachers per student is higher, it indicates the institute's obligation towards imparting quality education. Weightage given to this aspect is 20%.
  •      Citations per Faculty. The number of credits received by every faculty person provides a guesstimate of both the quality and effect of the scientific work that the universities have produced. Weightage given to this aspect is 20%.
  •       Employer Reputation– the views of recruiting companies globally on the educational institutions that provide top-class professionals.
  •       Global Faculty- the International Faculty Index is an indicator that assesses how attractive an educational institution is to teaching staff. Weightage for this aspect is 5%.
  •       International Students. It evaluates how appealing the institution is to foreign students. Weightage given to aspect is 5%.

QS attempts to provide a trustworthy tool that students, policymakers, sector leaders, researchers, and educators can use for measuring and comparing global educational institutions of higher education.

Top countries for study abroad include – Australia, Canada, Germany, the US, and the UK.

Many of these countries provide various permanent residency (PR) options for international students graduating from educational institutions.
