  • Understand how the Canada PNP process paves your way to permanent residence in Canada.

Many skilled professionals like you outside Canada are highly interested in immigrating to Canada for the want of a better lifestyle, career, and overall prosperity. Canada is a highly attractive destination for immigrants as it’s the most welcoming country for those who want to study, work, and settle in the country.

Many roads to one destination – Canada

Under Canada immigration, there are many pathways to move to Canada. These are available at both federal and provincial levels.

At the federal level, Canada Express Entry is the most popular and fastest immigration pathway. Under Canada Express Entry there are 3 economy-level immigration streams that cater to different types of migrants eligible to enter Canada. They are:

FSWP (Federal Skilled Worker Program)

This stream is meant for skilled workers who have foreign work experience.

FSTP (Federal Skilled Trades Program)

This stream is meant for skilled workers possessing qualifications and skills in a skilled trade.

CEC (Canadian Experience Class)

This stream is meant for skilled workers possessing Canadian work experience.

When IRCC conducts rounds of invitations, it invites eligible candidates to apply for Canada PR visa.

Immigrate via Canadian provinces

Every Canadian province has its own system of facilitating Canada immigration. Each province has the choice to nominate a deserving candidate so that such candidates can get an advantage in getting selected for Canada immigration. This is because once a candidate receives a provincial nomination, they will be awarded 600 CRS points.

As the highest CRS points get chosen for immigration by IRCC, even those who have low CRS scores in the Canada Express Entry system can get ahead in the line to get selected.

Nomination can be offered in 2 ways:

  • Under a PNP stream linked to Express Entry: In case you aren’t already in the Express Entry pool, you must create an Express Entry profile and be accepted into the pool.
  • Under a PNP stream that isn't linked to Express Entry: Those who are applying for permanent residency and were nominated under a PNP stream not linked with Express Entry have to apply for Canada PR via the regular application process.

Express Entry process of applying for nomination

This is an online process that can be done in one of the following ways:

  • First method
    • Contact the province/territory and file an application for a nomination under a stream of Express Entry.
    • In case the province/territory chooses to nominate you, create/update your Express Entry profile and show that you have been nominated.
  • Second method
    • Create an Express Entry profile and give the provinces and territories you are interested in.
    • If a province/territory sends you an NOI (notification of interest) to your account, contact them directly.
    • Apply to your Express Entry stream.

  • You have to meet the requirements laid out by the province/territory for eligibility.
  • You have to submit a profile in Express Entry. You also have to show that you satisfy the minimum Express Entry criteria. This includes eligibility for one of the immigration programs it covers.
  • In case you get an invitation to apply, submit an application to IRCC electronically.

The paper-based process of applying for nomination

Here’s how the paper-based process works:

  • Apply to the province/territory for nomination under a non-Express Entry stream.
  • You must meet the requirements for eligibility of the province that offers you nominates you.
  • Once you have been granted nomination, submit an application on paper for Canada PR to IRCC.
  • You must pass a medical examination and get a certificate for a police check. These checks must be had no matter where you plan to live in Canada.

In a paper-based process, the time taken for processing an application is longer than via Express Entry.

Each Canadian province has its own set of criteria to be met. While applying for nomination for Canada PR, be mindful of those and apply in the correct stream for the right results.
