Quebec needs more foreign nurses to work in the province

Quebec’s health network is looking for foreign nurses to fill the current shortages as per the report from Radio-Canada. The update is that there will be recruitment sessions will be conducted in Belgium and France in the coming months. This will be aimed at attracting 1,700 nurses as well as over 200 orderlies to Quebec.

In these times of dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, the shortage of nurses who work in Canada due to retirement and early exit could be a very serious concern for the province. For this reason, the number of foreign nurses being recruited is 5 times more than it was 2 years ago. This was stated by Radio-Canada.

As many other provinces are facing the same issue, as Globe and Mail stated, vacancies for nursing jobs have increased by close to 50% in 2020. This was seen particularly in intensive care and emergency rooms.

In November 2020, the rate of vacancy in the healthcare sector was higher than in any other industry. It came to one-fifth of all job vacancies as was pointed out by the Labor Force Survey in January 2021.

It’s been found that the job vacancies created in the healthcare sector could be partly due to the travel restriction owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. Immigrants play a major role in manning jobs in the healthcare sector.
