There has been a phenomenal bounce-back in Canada's job market in February 2022. The losses created by the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 pandemic have been shaken off and a surge in hiring has come around. This has pushed the rate of unemployment below what it was prior to the occurrence of the pandemic. This will influence Canada immigration greatly in a positive manner in the days to come. Statistics Canada has reported that Canada added 337,000 new jobs in February 2022. The unemployment rate has gone down to 5.5%. This is a remarkable improvement compared to the 5.7% rate of unemployment in February 2020 just before the COVID-19 pandemic started. This trend is expected to improve as the current unemployment rate is just a bit higher than the rate (5.4%) in May 2019. The string of lockdowns that were implemented to arrest the Omicron surge caused a surge in unemployment due to job losses in January 2022. Thankfully, the surge recorded in February 2022 could overcome that dip in employment. The food and accommodation sectors, which were affected the worst, rebounded with an addition of 114,000 fresh jobs. The total number of work hours also increased by 3.6% in February 2022, indicating a healthy comeback. In Ontario province, 194,300 new jobs were created. Other Canadian provinces also showed significant improvement. The unemployment rate came down to 4.5% in Quebec. The employment rate of men in the age range of 25 to 54 had their employment rate improve to reach 88.2%. This was the highest since 1981. For women in the same age range, the employment rate came to a record 81%. The gains in employment were almost double the losses in January 2022. Coming to the age range of 15 to 24 years, men added 67,000 jobs while women added 63,000 new jobs. Employment rates of close to 57% for men and 60% for women have been reached, which levels up with figures recorded before the COVID-19 occurred. Talking about individuals aged 55 or more, the gains in employment were concentrated for women and in part-time work assignments. There has been a growth in employment counting to 42,000 jobs for older women. This shows that the employment figures have achieved levels before the COVID-19 pandemic. Here’s a summary of the whole developments that have been happening in the Canadian labor market recently according to the Labor Force Survey:
Employment rate (%) 61.8
Unemployment rate (%) 5.5
Labour force participation rate (%) 65.4
Number working 19,512,700
Number unemployed 1,135,500
Unemployment rate (%) of men (aged above 25) 4.7
Unemployment rate (%) of women (aged above 25) 4.5
Unemployment rate (%) of youth (aged 15-24 years) 10.9
