Portugal Needs 100,000 foreign workers to Address Workforce Shortages in the country

According to Migrations and Human Rights, a recent study in Portugal has revealed that the country is seeking skilled foreign workers in large numbers. Portugal is currently facing workforce shortages and looking to accommodate 50,000 to 100,000 foreigners yearly.

According to the General Union of Workers (UGT), the country’s aging population and reduced birth rate are leading to a labor crisis. Portugal currently has around 57,000+ job vacancies across different sectors. While sectors like Information and communication technologies, Healthcare, Hospitality, and agriculture are in demand, the construction sector alone is seeking nearly 80,000 surplus workers.

Portugal Government to Implement Immigration Processes for Foreign Workers

To further address the workforce shortages in the country, the Portuguese government has announced plans to streamline the immigration processes for skilled foreign workers. The country aims to accelerate entry for foreigners looking to work in Portugal. The Government added that new measures would be implemented to regularize the procedures for foreign nationals entering Portugal for employment purposes. A final verdict has yet to be made and released by the Portuguese government.
