Ontario’s Labour Market

Around 2 lakh international immigrants entered Ontario in 2022, while 2023 witnessed a record of 2.5 lakh. According to the reports, immigrants have added to two-thirds of Ontario's workflow increase since 2010. 

Ontario is one of Canada's most favoured provinces and adds a large share of nominations via Canada PNP. The PNP selects eligible economic candidates and nominates them for a Canada PR. 

 

 

The inflow of immigrants to Ontario is based on the federal Immigration Levels Plan of Canada. The IRCC releases a new immigration target for the cap of PR residents annually.

A majority of newcomers migrate to Ontario in their core working age:

Over 2 lakh immigrants will be welcomed by Ontario in 2022, with 92% of them belonging to the core working age. The core working age can be anything under 54 years of age.

Half the population of Ontario’s newcomers are economic immigrants:

Reports suggest that around 43.4% of immigrants to Ontario were economic immigrants in the 1980s. The economic immigrant rate has further increased to 51.7%.

Most of the economic immigrants enter Ontario via:

• Express Entry
• Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSTP)
• Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
• Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
• Family Class Sponsorship

 

Increase in Median Wage:

As per 2020 stats, candidates who came to Ontario with a Bachelor's degree or higher received a high median wage of ($61,200) compared to the others. 

Candidates who immigrated to Canada via CEC earn $60,100 on average after 12 months of entering Canada. Candidates who immigrated to Canada via FSWP, FSTP and PNP make relatively less, with a median pay of $43,000.

 

Rate of Labour participation:

One of the significant labour market confines for licensed professionals in the healthcare sector is foreign credential recognition. As per the Report, between 2006 and 2022, the rate of unemployment of core-working immigrants was 7.4%.
