Straight to Residence Pathways for Secondary Teachers 

New Zealand is in demand for overseas secondary school teachers. Starting in May 2024, the Government of New Zealand has announced a fast-track transition of secondary teachers from the Green List Work to the Straight to Residence pathways. 

This move aims to improve certainty and provide a simple, prioritized procedure for secondary school teachers. Under the recent change, overseas secondary teachers can apply for residence permits from abroad instead of acquiring work experience in New Zealand first.

Job Vacancies in New Zealand’s education sector 

The education system in New Zealand is actively looking for secondary teachers in disciplines such as Science, Mathematics, and Technology. To address the labor shortage, the New Zealand Government has announced plans to move secondary teachers to the Straight to Residence pathway while other teachers continue to be on the Work to Residence pathway. 

The eligibility requirements for secondary school teachers to apply for the Straight to Residence pathway are:

• They must have a job offer from an accredited employer
• The job role must be listed under Tier 1 of the Green List in-demand
