Application for residence permit

The application for residence permit will vary based on whether you wish to work, study or join a family member in Finland.

Residence permit for working in Finland

  • Residence permit for self-employment: This permit can be given to individuals within a company, including private businessmen, associates, and cooperative leaders. Before this permit can be granted has to be registered with the Trade Register at the National Patent and Registration Board.
  • Residence permit for an employed person: This visa is the most common type of work visa. There are three types of visas in this category-
  • Continuous (A), Temporary (B), and Permanent (P). Employees who are seeking residency for the first time in Finland will apply for a Temporary Permit.
  • A temporary residency permit is issued as a fixed-term (B) or continuous residence permit, depending on the duration of the stay. The first permit is usually given for one year, unless you apply explicitly for a shorter validity period. Ongoing residence permits may be extended at a time for a maximum of three years.
  • Residence permit for self-employment: This permit can be given to individuals within a company, including private businessmen, associates, and cooperative leaders. Before this permit can be granted has to be registered with the Trade Register at the National Patent and Registration Board.

Residence permit for studying in Finland

A Finland student residence permit is given to a foreign student who wishes to stay and study in Finland for more than three months or ninety days. In general, a student residence permit for Finland is granted for 1 year at a time.

The studies must lead to a bachelor's degree or a vocational certificate.

For the duration of the course, students holding a residence permit are allowed to bring their spouse and children to Finland. They would have to apply for a visa separately to enter the country.

In Finland, you are responsible for your own financial well-being. In Finland, finding job as a student is challenging. Before you arrive to Finland, make sure you have enough money to cover your expenses for the duration of your study.

As a student you will be responsible for your own medical expenses as a student. For your residency permit, you will require private insurance to cover your medical expenses.

Residence permit to join family members

A person living in Finland can bring his family members to Finland and is called the sponsor. He must first have a residence permit before bringing in family members or can apply for their residence permits when making an application for himself.

Family members include spouse or registered partner and children under 18 years of age.
