The Government of Japan introduced significant changes to the Skilled Foreign Worker Visa. The visa expansion aims to make it more accessible for individuals to have extended stays for up to 5 years.
Some of the significant changes announced to the visa program are as follows:
The cabinet announced the addition of four new industries to the Specified Skilled Worker visa list, making a total count of 16.
The four new categories are:
The government plans to invite 820,000 skilled foreign workers in the next five fiscal years from April 2024.
Japan plans to propose upgrading the rules to promote faster and more efficient acceptance and enrolment of skilled foreign workers in the new sectors.
Skilled workers are eligible for the following roles under the Road Transportation sector:
Note: The companies employing the workers must be certified by the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism.
Skilled workers can engage in any of the following roles under the Railway sector:
Note: For roles involving passenger communication, candidates must have up to N3 level of proficiency in the Japanese language.

The latest reforms were announced to contribute to the foreign trainee program that deals with skill development and workers' rights.
