A recent report by Japan Times states that digital nomads belonging to 49 territories and countries shifting to places for short or medium-term stay would be eligible for the "Specified activities visa category." Self-employed applicants can also apply for this visa.
This six-month visa will be issued by the end of March 2024, as reported by recent data. The visa's duration was decided based on the preferences of most Digital Nomads, who wanted a more extended stay than the current 90-day limit.
Countries including the US, Australia and Singapore, some of the 49 countries with an existing agreement or tax treaty with Japan, do not need a visa to travel to Japan.
Digital Nomads looking to apply for this visa must meet the following eligibility criteria:
However, applicants must note that this visa is not subject to renewal, and one has to reapply six months after leaving Japan.
