What’s the PGWP program?

PGWP is an open work permit program that’s meant to enable international students graduating from Canada to work in Canada. It’s an open work permit with which Canadian graduates can:

• Work part-time
• Work full-time
• Be self-employed

The validity of PGWP is determined by the duration of the course the student has joined to study in Canada. The minimum duration of the course must be 18 months and the maximum duration allowed is 3 years.

Eligibility for PGWP

Some of the important eligibility criteria for international students who graduate from Canada to apply for PGWP from inside Canada are as follows:

• After getting the diploma/degree, an official letter of completion, or transcript, the candidate must apply for PGWP within 180 days.
• In case the validity of the study permit of the candidate expires before getting the mark sheet, that candidate can either:
  • Lodge an application for a visitor record and stay some more time in Canada, or
  • Leave Canada and lodge an application for PGWP.
• The candidate’s study permit must have been valid within the last 180 days.

Here are a few instances in which a candidate cannot be eligible to apply for PGWP:

• The candidate has already received a PGWP
• The candidate studied French or English as a second language
• The candidate took self-improvement or general interest courses
• The candidate has taken part in the Canadian government’s awards program funded by Global Affairs Canada
• The Candidate completed a study program at an institution located in Canada but is non-Canadian
• The candidate has done a major part of the Canadian study program via distance learning including online courses, correspondence courses, or e-learning.

Now, the eligibility criterion that online education will not make you eligible for applying for PGWP is very important information for those looking forward to working after they study in Canada.

 

The significance of this criterion is huge. International students have been doing online courses during the COVID-19 pandemic and still prefer to do it, be it from inside or outside Canada. In any case, online studies will not make them eligible for PGWP.
