Hungary implements new immigration law for resident permits 2024

  • Hungary introduces 24 types of residence permits, including 8 for employment purposes, under the new immigration laws in 2024.

Extension of residence permit expiry date

The introduction of the new immigration law includes the extension of the expiry dates for Hungary residence permits. The residence permits, which were to expire in January and February, have now been extended until April 30, 2024. 

 

New residence permit applications from third-country nationals have also been postponed until the end of April. Resident permit applications representing the national interest of EU countries remain an exception. 

 

However, old regulations will be applied to requests filed before December 31, 2023, and are to be decided only after March 01, 2024.

 

 

New Immigration Law in Hungary

Hungary started implementing the new immigration law at the beginning of 2024. According to SchengenVisaInfo, the new immigration laws in Hungary stop third-country nationals from applying for resident permits for another two months.

 

The changes implemented under the new immigration law are listed below: 

  • Introduction of 24 types of resident permits 
  • Allotting eight types of resident permits for employment purposes only
  • The introduction of a new permit for investors 
  • The introduction of separate categories for high-skilled and low-skilled workers 
  • Granting worker residence permits to employees based on employers, occupations or countries.
  • Allowing the extension of resident work permits for up to three years
  • Barring non-EU workers from applying for family reunification or permanent residence in Hungary.

Hungary’s New Golden Visa

The new immigration law introduced an investor residence permit known as the Golden Visa, effective July 01, 2024. Individuals investing a minimum of €250,000 in real estate would be eligible to apply for this visa, allowing them a ten-year residence permit with a ten-year extension period. 

 

The Immigration Office (OIF) reports that around 430,000 foreigners currently hold a residence permit in Hungary, most of which are work or study permits. This figure includes 162,000 people with a Hungarian residence permit and 161,000 EU-registration card holders.
