Work visa options

There are several work visa choices; three of them lead to permanent residency, while the other two are temporary and only allow you to stay in the nation for a short period.

Permanent work visas

  1. Employer Nomination Scheme visa (Subclass 186): Employers can nominate you for this visa through the Employer Nomination Scheme. Your occupation must be on the list of qualifying skilled occupations, and the list must be related to your talents. This visa allows you to live and work in Australia indefinitely.

Eligibility requirements for applicants are, they must:

Be under 45 years old

Possess excellent English skills

Complete less than three-year-old skills exam for their specified occupation from the applicable assessing authority.

Have a minimum of three years of experience in the field.

Hold a license or registration or be a member of a professional body

Comply with all health and character requirements

You can do the following with this visa:

Work and study in Australia.

Stay in Australia for as long as you want.

Join Australia's universal healthcare program.

Make an application for citizenship in Australia.

Sponsor eligible relatives for a temporary visa or permanent stay.

 Obligations under the Subclass186 visa

Visa holders and their families must follow all Australian laws, and they must be willing to work for their nominating employer for at least two years. Those who obtain the visa must be prepared to commence work within six months of their admission into the country if they received the visa outside of Australia or within six months of the date of the visa if they obtained the visa while inside Australia.

Employers can sponsor individuals on a 457, TSS, or working holiday visa. This visa can lead to permanent residency.

Skill Select

When an employer does not hire you, you can submit your application to the Skill Select program. Employers and state and territorial governments will have access to your information through this service, and they will be able to nominate you. When you submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through the Skill Select program, you inform the government that you want to work in Australia.

Your occupation must be on the Skilled Occupations List to file an EOI. Following receipt of your EOI, you will get a ranking using a points test. You are eligible for the Skill Select program if you have the required points.

  1. Skilled Independent visa (Subclass 189)

You must first submit an Expression of Interest through Skill Select and obtain the required points before applying for this visa. Even if an employer does not nominate you, you can apply for the Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189).

Eligibility requirements

Experience in a nominated occupation on Australia's Skilled Occupations List

Skill evaluation report for that occupation from a designated authority.

Age below 45 years.

Meet basic Skilled Migration standards.

Pass the points test with a score of at least 65.

Meet health and character requirements

  1. Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190)

Subclass 190 is your visa option if an Australian state or territory nominates you. The benefits of this visa are the same as those of the Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189).

Eligibility requirements are also the same.

Advantages of the visa

It is a long-term visa that allows you to remain in Australia indefinitely. However, you are only allowed to travel to and from Australia for the first five years of your visa. You'll need a Resident Return (RRV) visa (subclass 155 or 157) to travel outside the nation and re-enter as a permanent resident after the 5 years is up.

Temporary work visas

1.TSS visa (Temporary Skill Shortage): This visa allows individuals to work for two to four years, depending on the employee's needs. Australian businesses must demonstrate that they are experiencing a skills shortage.

With this visa, workers can stay in the country for 2 to 4 years.

There are three streams in the Temporary Skill Shortage visa:

  • The Short-Term stream
  • The Medium-Term stream
  • The Labor Agreement stream

Applicants must be under 45 years old and have at least two years of work experience. They must have the necessary abilities for the job and work in one of the Consolidated Skilled Occupations.

Employers who engage workers on this visa must pay them the going rate.

The TSS visa allows you to do the following:

Work in Australia for up to four years for your sponsor.

Include members of your family in your visa application.

Your family members can live, work, and study in Australia if they come with you on this visa.

Travel in and out of Australia as often as you like till your visa expires.

If you are eligible, you can apply for permanent residence.

If you want to stay longer than four years, your company will need to submit for a new nomination, and you will need to apply for a new visa.

Conditions and obligations

When the visa is issued, you must start working within 90 days if you are outside of Australia.

If you are outside of Australia when the visa is granted, you must start working within 90 days of arrival or within 90 days of the visa being granted if you are in Australia.

You can only work for the employer who sponsored your visa and the nominated occupation.

As long as your visa is valid, you can travel in and out of Australia. However, the time you spend outside of Australia does not count against the length of your visa.

  1. Working holiday visa: This visa is for those aged 18 to 30 who want to work in Australia for a short period while on vacation there. The time frame is 12 months. While on vacation, you must adhere to the statutory health and character criteria and not have any dependents with you.

You can do the following with a working holiday visa:

Enter the nation and stay for six months.

Exit and re-enter the nation multiple times.

Work with an employee for up to six months.

During the visa period, you might choose to study for four months.

Work visa application process

Skill assessment:The evaluation of skills is an important part of the work visa application procedure. One must choose an occupation from the Occupational Demand List of Australia. This list will include occupations in which there is a skill shortage. Every occupation on the list has its authority for evaluating skills. The ACS (Australian Computer Society) rates IT and computer-related jobs. The TRA (Trade Recognition Australia) or the VETASSESS assess trade occupations (Vocational Educational and Training Assessment Services).

A favorable skill assessment is required for a candidate to advance to the next stage of the visa application procedure.

Candidates must meet the requirements given by the assessing authority evaluating their occupation to complete their skill assessment. To receive a favorable evaluation, the candidate must possess the necessary qualifications and experience.

Your occupation must be relevant to your work experience, the first condition for a good competence assessment. You will not receive the required points if there is a mismatch.

You must also submit all of the appropriate documentation. These must be genuine and thorough, and even minor discrepancies can result in a poor assessment. You must provide all extra information requested by the evaluating authority.

The documents should back up your statements about your qualifications and experience.

The assessing authority considers the following factors:

  • Occupation for which you have made a nomination
  • Your credentials
  • Your professional background
  • Your work's relevance to your profession
  • Visa category you have applied

Skill assessment agencies require documentation of passing a language assessment test such as the IELTS or PTE.

You must also provide evidence of your work experience, which can include the following:

  • Payslips
  • Letters of recommendation from employers
  • Salary credits in bank statements

Processing time and cost

The length of time it takes to process your visa application depends on the type of visa you are applying for. The processing period will include the time it takes to verify the information and any further information requested by the authorities. The processing time for your visa will take between 6 and 12 months on average.

The fee is based on the type of visa you apply for. Fees are updated regularly. So, before submitting your application, double-check the fees.
