International students who have completed two years of study in Australia are eligible for this visa. It allows them to reside and work in the country for a period ranging from 18 months up to 4 years.
Under the Subclass 485 visa, there are two streams:
Graduate work: This visa is issued to students who have completed their two-year study in the Oceania country. Their study must be relevant to the designated occupation. This visa is valid for 18 months.
Post-study work: This visa is granted to foreign students who have completed a bachelor's degree or higher at an educational institution in Australia. These applicants must nominate a profession that is listed on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL).
They are allowed to stay for up to 4 years with this visa.
The duration of the visa holders' stay is based on their qualifications. If they have completed a bachelor's or a master's degree, they can stay for two years and three years if they have completed a master's research-based degree.
They can bring their family members on this visa. Their family members can reside and work temporarily, study here and travel within and overseas as long as their visa is valid.
As the Subclass 485 visa allows graduates to reside and work in Australia while letting them apply for other job opportunities, these visa holders are entitled to apply for a PR visa provided they obtain enough points and meet the eligibility requirements needed to stay in Australia.
Alternatively, they can scour for an employer willing to provide them with a permanent ENS 186/ RSMS 187 visa (TSS visa). Students applying via the General Skilled Migration program must ensure getting their skills assessment performed by the skills assessing authority, provided the occupation of the applying student is on the SOL of the government of Australia.
Australia's Department of Immigration and Board Protection (DIPB) lists occupations needed for the country's economic growth and development. There are two lists that are released by the department of education and training releases every year. One is the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), and the other is the Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL).
