Germany began implementing a new law that eased the visa requirements for nurses, information technology [IT] specialists, besides vocationally trained workers and other occupations in other technical professions.

Enforced on March 1, 2020, Fachkraefteeinwanderungsgesetz, German for Skilled Workers Immigration Law, a skilled migrant worker who speaks German quite fluently is eligible for a six-month visa to scour for a job. Included in these are all individuals who have undergone vocational training that is on par with the German standards. But they need to have secured a minimum of B-1 level in German language tests conducted by the Goethe Institute or in an equivalent test.

The problem with Germany is that it has to deal with an aging society. At the same time, there are not enough young Germans who are commencing their professional lives. There is a shortage of workers in healthcare, especially professional nurses. The demand is high for nursing workers with varying qualification levels to meet the rising demand, be it in hospitals and other care facilities. The shortage is only going to increase in the future. Nurses will tend to people and be by the sides of patients until the time they recover. Their responsibilities will include patient care, attending to children, and attending to the elderly.

Included in their responsibilities would be complete observation, support, guidance, and patient care, inpatient as well as outpatient treatment. In addition, they may also keep notes and assess nursing methods, besides following medical instructions to the T and aiding with medical procedures. Nurses also need to be the right contact points of contact for patients' family members.

Eligibility criteria for foreign nursing professionals

Those who want to be employed in the profession of nursing in the world's fourth-richest country for a long haul need to be officially authorized to work in this profession. They need to follow official eligibility criteria to be allowed to work in this profession in Germany.

Accepted credentials: Applicants must possess qualifications from their countries in nursing that need to be valid in Germany. Capable authorities will assess whether an individual's qualifications are on par with German qualifications. If certain individuals do not have it, they should take an evaluation test or undergo a period of adaptation to prove that their knowledge is equivalent to German requirements. The professional recognition of Germany is valid throughout the country. Aspirants who want to be recognized professionally can submit their applications to the relevant authorities in the states where they intend to be employed.

Adequate proficiency in the German language: As per the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), depending on the country you would want to work in, you would need to obtain a level on par with the B2 or B1 levels language there.

Health qualification: A German doctor needs to certify that a candidate is physically and mentally able and is, therefore, fit for a job in this profession.

Individual ability/Reliability: You will need to prove that you do not have any criminal history. For that, you may also need to furnish a document certifying that you are of good conduct from your native country or a Führungszeugnis, a German certificate of conduct. Recognition of qualification is dependent on when an individual obtained his/her qualification and not his/her country of origin.

Visa requirements

Citizens of the European Union (EU), Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland do not need either a visa or a residence permit to work in Germany. Applicants, however, from countries other than the ones mentioned above need to apply for a residence permit. Specific individuals can arrive in Germany for six months on a jobseeker visa to search for this job.
