Help your parents/grandparents migrate to Canada through PGP

Let’s talk about how Canada PR visa holders can bring their parents/grandparents to Canada through sponsorship. If you were to become a permanent resident in Canada, you can help your parents and grandparents migrate to Canada too. Here’s how it works.

As a Canadian permanent resident, you have to submit an interest to sponsor your parents/grandparents. If the authorities invite you to apply, there will be 2 applications that will be submitted and reviewed for the PGP (Parents & Grandparents Program). They are:

• The application for sponsorship
• The application for a Canada PR visa for parents/grandparents

Once both applications are approved, you as the sponsor will sign an agreement (undertaking). This agreement takes effect right from the day the sponsored party becomes a permanent resident in Canada.

The minimum fee to sponsor a parent/grandparent is $1,050. The processing time taken for applications is between 20 and 24 months. This time includes the time the sponsored parties require to give their biometrics.

The eligibility criteria for becoming a sponsor

The sponsor must:

• Be a Canadian citizen/PR
• Live in Canada
• Be at least 18 years of age
• Be invited to apply
• Have enough money to support those who are sponsored
• Meet all other criteria under the Immigration & Refugee Protection Regulations and Immigration & Refugee Protection Act

If you live outside Quebec in Canada, the undertaking will bind you in the commitment to:

• Support the family members you sponsored for 20 years right from when they become Canada PR visa holders
• Repay any social assistance taken from the provincial government by your sponsored family members during this 20-year period

The responsibilities that the sponsor and the sponsored accept during the term of the undertaking constitute a sponsorship agreement. It implies that:

• The sponsor will provide the basic requirements of the sponsored members. These include:
  • food
  • personal requirements
  • household supplies
  • clothing
  • shelter
  • health care beyond the coverage of public health insurance (E.g., dental and eye care)
  • utilities
  • Fuel
• The sponsored persons will make all efforts to support themselves as well as their family members

Meeting the basic needs of the sponsored will be agreed upon and executed even in case of:

• Ending of marriage as in separation/divorce
• Unemployment
• Death of the main applicant, if you sponsor their family members too
• Rifts in the family
• Change in finances

Currently the deadline for applying for sponsorship and the Canada PR of those sponsored is 11:59 PM EST on December 6, 2021.

The applications are lodged online. If you are filling applications for sponsorship without receiving an invitation to apply for the 2021 process, your application will be rejected and the sponsorship application processing fees paid won’t be refunded.
