Operations, Planning, and Performance division under IRCC drafted a memo in which it was recommended to process 285,000 decisions and 300,000 new citizens by March 31, 2023. A decision refers to the review of applications which can be denied, approved, or can be marked as incomplete.
The number of applications for citizenship has increased in comparison to 2021-2022. It even surpassed the number of new citizens in 2019-2020 which was 253,000. IRCC welcomed 217,000 new citizens in 2021-2022 and in 2022-2023, the number of new citizens welcomed till date is 116,000.
Canada is on its way to meet the target of providing citizenship to 300,000 applicants. The table below reveals the number of new citizens who took oath in different fiscal years:
Fiscal Year |
Number of new citizens |
2019-2020 |
253,000 |
2021-2022 |
217,000 |
2022-2023 till date |
116,000 |
Previously, IRCC used to process paper applications but after the pandemic, the online processing of applications started from November 2020. The memo recommends IRCC to continue the processing of applications online. In 2021, 5,000 digital applications were processed online out of 245,000 decisions.
Processing time for citizenship applications as per the report published in May 2022 is 27 months. The memo declared that because of the increase in the number of online applications, processing time may be delayed.
IRCC is taking steps to clear the backlog of all the new applications up to 80 percent within service standards. IRCC hired 1,000 new staff to increase the speed of processing of applications. Candidates under the age of 18 years will also become eligible apply for citizenship by the end of 2022.
