Germany’s new Citizenship Law

Germany introduced a new citizenship law on June 27, 2024, that facilitates foreigners currently residing in the country to acquire easier German citizenship without giving up their nationality. The new law also streamlines the existing rules for attaining a German passport.

The eligibility criteria for obtaining German citizenship will also expand, allowing more people to qualify. This decision was taken considering the expected rise in the naturalization figures in 2024. As per Nancy Faeser, the Minister of Interior of Germany, all foreigners living in the country who fulfill all the requirements and share the same values as the locals can now acquire prompt citizenship.
