The family-sponsorship program in Canada is on the path to proving that the future of Canada immigration is bright. The present trend of Canada immigration is paving the path for achieving the highest number of immigrants in Canada in 2022.

In 2022, as per IRCC, 41,625 newcomers arrived in Canada through family sponsorship by the end of May 2022. If the present trend is maintained, IRCC gives a projection that by the end of 2022, the number of newcomers through family sponsorship will reach 99,900 people. This, if achieved, will be 9.4% above the previous record of 91,300 newcomers that was set in 2019.

The upward journey of Canada immigration

Family sponsorship programs for Canada immigration have always shown steady growth before the COVID-19 pandemic. The following statistics will reflect this fact:

  • In 2016, 12,520 newcomers (19.1%) were added, and a total of 78,005 immigrants arrived in Canada.
  • In 2017, the volume of newcomers through family sponsorship programs grew by 5.7% and the number of immigrants reached 82,465.
  • In 2018, there was a slowdown in the growth rate of the immigrant population via family sponsorship programs. That year, Canada had 85,165 newcomers who arrived through these programs. That year, the increase was only about 3.3% compared to 2017.
  • However, in 2019 the number of newcomers who arrived in Canada via family sponsorship increased by 7.2%. This translates to 6,135 new permanent residents arriving in Canada.

It fell by 46%, and only 49,310 newcomers arrived in Canada in 2020 through these programs.

In 2021, Canada used the TR to PR program that was specifically designed aiming at welcoming up to 90,000 applications from temporary visa holders wanting to become Canada PR visa holders. These measures found good results and created 406,005 new permanent residents in 2021.
