In 2019, Canada will drop the lottery system that allowed immigrants to sponsor their parents and grandparents. It will revert back to the first-come-first-served system it followed prior to 2017. Under the Family Sponsorship Program of Canada, 20,500 visa places have been set aside for the year 2019. For 2020, the quota is 21,000. This is a considerable hike from 2017 when the quota was 17,000. Canada will start accepting applications for its Family Program by the end of January. The announcement was made by an IRCC spokesperson on 31st December 2018. Ahmed Hussen, Immigration Minister, said that the lottery system received negative feedback from a lot of Canadians. This was the primary reason why it was scrapped, as quoted by CBC News. Uzma Jalal, who is now a Canadian citizen, has been trying to get her parents to Canada from Bangladesh for 7 years. She had filed her first sponsorship application in 2011. She received consecutive rejections in 2011, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017. As per Uzma, the rejections had nothing to do with her parents’ eligibility. She says that the rejections happened due to a backlog of applications. The Family Sponsorship Program of Canada had been swamped under massive backlogs for years. In 2011, there were 167,000 pending applications. As per IRCC statistics, this number has come down to 26,000 in June 2018. The processing time for the Family Sponsorship Program has also been shortened. Previously application took up to 8 years to be processed. The processing time has now come down to 2 years. The increase in the quota signals good news for many immigrant families in Canada. These changes in the Family Sponsorship Program of Canada will now help many Canadians to reunite with their parents and grandparents.
