Simplified Migration process for foreign workers in the EU

According to the recent reports by SchengenVisaInfo, the European Union is planning to simplify the process for obtaining work and residency permits in Europe. The move aims to promote legal migration from third-world countries while addressing the current issue of labor shortage in Europe.

The European Union is willing to regulate the process of acquiring a single permit and is planning to make it more streamlined. This change will enable foreign workers to live and work within the EU.

However, the new regulations are yet to be approved by the Council.

Changes introduced for the Single Permit System

Several changes have been introduced under the new update for the Single Permit System. The changes aim to increase the system's efficiency while making it more flexible for foreign workers.

Following are the changes proposed for the Single Permit System:

  • Decision on Single Permit within 90 days: Under the new orders proposed by the EU, Member States are to process Single Permit applications within 90 days. This aims to reduce the long waiting period, which is currently four months. A 30-day extension is allowed only for complicated cases.
  • Single Permit application within the EU: The new regulations allow existing residence permit holders from third-world countries to apply for a Single Permit within the EU. They are no longer required to return to their home countries for a Single permit application.
  • Change of employer, occupation, or work sector: Single permit holders from third-country nations can now opt for a change of employer, occupation, or work sector with a straightforward notification procedure by the new employer. However, a six-month restriction may be enforced on employer changes with exemptions in cases of employer contract violations.
  • Protection for Third Country nations with Single Work Permit: Unemployed third country nations holding a Single Permit visa will receive more security.
  • Extended stay for unemployed Single Permit Holders: Single Permit holders facing unemployment issues can have up to three months to find other employment opportunities before the withdrawal of their permits. Third-country nationals holding a Single Permit for more than two years can have six months to find employment and stay in the EU.

The Member States will have two years to implement the changes after the Council approves the new rules. Changes do not apply to Denmark and Ireland, as per SchengenVisaInfo reports.
