Constraints of a Canada Study Permit 

A Canada student permit comes with its own set of limitations and conditions, some of which are mentioned below:

  • The student must be admitted at a registered Canadian DLI (Designated Learning Institute) with exemptions.
  • The student must exhibit active participation in studies in Canada.
  • The student must inform the Canadian government about any changes related to post-secondary schooling.
  • The student must terminate their studies if they don't meet the requirements.
  • The student must exit the country upon the expiration of their permit.
  • The student's level of study and the on- and off-campus status must be stated clearly.
  • The student is required to attend the mandatory medical checks and procedures.
  • The date by which the student must cease their studies must be mentioned.

 

International Students and work constraints 

International students with working approval can either work on or off campus. Students can start working once their studies commence.

Note: Certain students are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week until 31 December 2023.

 

 

On-campus restrictions 

Full-time International students with a valid study permit and a SIN (Social Insurance Number) can work on campus.

International students must stop working on campus in any of the conditions mentioned below:

  • The day of the student's full-time studies ends.
  • Upon the expiration of their study permit.
  • Upon having an authorized leave from their studies.
  • If the student is currently not studying and plans on shifting schools.

 

Off-campus restrictions

Full-time International students at a Designated Learning Institute (DLI), admitted in a professional or vocational training program or post-secondary academic with a SIN (Social Insurance Number) and a valid study permit, can work off campus.

Note: Students must be admitted with a diploma degree certificate valid for a minimum of 6 months.

International students must stop working off-campus in any of the conditions mentioned below:

  • If the study permit doesn't authorize work off-campus while pursuing their studies.
  • If the student has French or English as their second language (ESL/FSL) program.
  • If the student is enrolled in General interest courses.
  • If the student is taking courses required to be registered in a full-time program.
  • If the student fails to meet the requirements for off-campus work.

International Students and Travel opportunities

Canada permits international students to travel without restrictions during the validity of their study permit. However, students must comply with the re-entry rules that are mentioned below:


 

Re-entry restrictions for International students 

International students must have a valid study permit and study permit extension and must follow the rules given below:

  • The student must have a valid travel itinerary proof like the eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) or a temporary resident permit.
  • The student must be attending a Canadian Designated Learning Institute (DLI).
  • The students must meet Canada's other re-entry requirements.

Outcomes for not adhering to the study permit conditions

The international student who fails to meet the study permit conditions may be liable for the following:

  • The student might lose the study permit and student status.
  • The student will be asked to leave the country.
  • The student will be required to wait 26 weeks to apply for a new Canada study permit, work permit, or visitor permit.

 

Study Permit Conditions: Exemptions 

Some of the study permit holders that are exempt from the restrictions are listed below:

  • Individuals with refugee status in Canada.
  • Individuals dependent or spouse of a work permit or study permit holder.
  • Individuals currently studying in Canada under an exchange agreement between Canada and another country.
