The latest update on shortages of skilled labor to work in Canada in Canadian provinces reveals which provinces need skilled workers the most. As per the update, the provinces of Yukon, British Columbia, and Quebec are facing the most of labor shortages. Here are the latest job vacancy rates in these provinces:

  • Yukon – 5.4%
  • British Columbia – 5.8%
  • Quebec – 5.6%

How is job vacancy calculated by Canada?

The number of postings for open jobs on the last business day of the month is divided by the total number of positions. The job positions include those that are open and that are filled. Then the number is multiplied by 100 so that a percentage can be arrived at.

In the 3 provinces, aforementioned over 1 in 20 jobs were open. In some cases, there was a dire need for qualified applicants to handle the job roles.

More news on job vacancy rates

The following provinces/regions had the lowest job vacancy rates in February 2022:

  • Newfoundland & Labrador - 2.9%
  • Nunavut - 3.1%

Other regions had the following job vacancy rates:

  • The Northwest Territories - 3.3%
  • Saskatchewan – 3.7%
  • Nova Scotia - 3.7%

There’s a trend of an increasing shortage of skilled people to work in Canada that’s revealed by the data shared by Statistics Canada. This has been happening even when Canada achieved a record-breaking immigration level in 2021.

Every month the statistical and demographic services agency brings up the numbers to calculate the ratio of the number of unemployed people for each job vacancy in Canada. A lower ratio indicates a tighter labor market.

In February 2022 that ratio dropped to 1.4 unemployed people per job vacancy in Canada. This was following a drop in the ratio from 1.7 in January 2022.

In British Columbia and Quebec, the labor shortages were even greater. The ratio for La Belle Province stood at just 1.0 and the ratio for the West Coast province was a mere 1.1.

The Institut du Québec, a Quebec think tank, issued a report that showed that Quebec’s labor market is possibly even tighter than it was at the end of 2021.

The Institut du Québec conducted a study on job vacancies and salaries during the 4th trimester of 2021. They found that there weren’t enough people in Quebec seeking employment at that period of time to fill the job vacancies.

The hopes and expectations

The TFWP (Temporary Foreign Worker Program) and the IMP (International Mobility Program) are 2 major programs that are giving hope to Canadian employers. These programs are expected to bring foreign nationals to work in Canada and fill those jobs temporarily that are facing the most manpower requirements.

The GTS (Global Talent Stream) is capable of leading to the issuance of Canadian work permits. GTS is a part of the TFWP. GTS can also lead to the processing of visa applications in under 2 weeks.

Canadian employers can also get foreign nationals to come to Canada to fill available job vacancies via the Canada Express Entry system.

Eligible applicants can submit an EOI which is an online profile, under 1 of the 3 federal immigration programs. Otherwise, they can take part in an immigration program at the provincial level, to the Express Entry Pool.

Know your eligibility to immigrate to Canada, through Y-Axis Canada Immigration Points Calculator.

The candidates’ profiles are given ranks against one another on the basis of points assigned for human capital factors in a points-based system. This system is called the CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System). Candidates who score the highest are considered for ITAs (invitations) for Canada PR. Those getting an ITA have to quickly submit a completed application. They also have to pay the processing fees within 90 days.
