After the significant impact of COVID-19 that pushed Canada immigration to the brink in 2020, this year the country is all set to bounce back to normal. It’s making the best efforts to revive its immigration and, in the process, Canadian economy.
In 2019, Canada had 341,000 new immigrants. 2020 began with Canada continuing to accept new immigrants at higher numbers. Then came COVID-19 in March 2020, and Canada responded with border closure and travel restrictions to prevent the spread of the pandemic.
Now, after the whole of 2020 has passed, the speculations and expectations for immigration Canada hold so dearly to is already out for us to check out. The most positive development at the moment is that vaccines against the pandemic have started to roll out and the end of this crisis appears to be approaching sooner than expected.
In December 2020, Canada started off the largest vaccination campaign in its history. Canada intends to vaccinate everybody willing to have immunity from COVID-19 by September 2021. Vaccination will ensure that Canada will be ready to bring immigration back to normal. Also, foreign travelers arriving in Canada will be free from the COVID-19 virus.
In view of keeping the spread of COVID-19 in check, Canada will in all possibility continue with essential measures like compulsory 14-day quarantine for all those who arrive in the country. Other precautions like social distancing and wearing masks will also be ensured.
Canada’s Immigration Levels Plan 2021-2023 reflects the country’s commitment to welcoming TFWs, immigrants, and international students. Canada aims to bring in over 400,000 new immigrants every year. This is the highest level of immigration envisaged in its entire history.
Though Canada may not be able to physically invite the desired number of immigrants in 2021, it can give the required approvals to the prospective immigrants allowing them to come to Canada later.
Setting the target so high has the intention of mustering the required support Canada needs for post-COVID recovery on the economic front.
Moreover, IRCC will conduct its 2020 intake under the PGP lottery in early 2021. Up to 10,000 applicants will be invited to submit applications for sponsorship of their parents and grandparents. Another PGP lottery will follow, which will invite up to 30,000 applicants for sponsorship of their family members.
