If you are an international student getting ready to study in Canada, the guidelines issued by Canada’s federal government will be necessary for you to know. The new guide has outlined the roles and responsibilities of the Canadian government, Canadian territories and provinces, and DLIs in giving support to international students.

Here are a few points from the guide that’s aligned with the health advisory from Canada’s Public Health Agency.

COVID-19:  Guide for international students in Canada arriving from abroad
International students and accompanying family members must be free of COVID-19 symptoms to board the flight to Canada.
If the student or family member shows COVID-19 symptoms upon arrival in Canada, that person will be barred from entry or taken to healthcare for medical examination
International students can arrive in Canada to go to an institution with a COVID-19 readiness plan.
Besides a study permit, the students must have a travel authorization from IRCC, which is subject to cancellation in case of a change in circumstances at their school, province, or territory.
The students will have to show proof that they are in Canada for non-discretionary purposes. They should prove that they are studying at an approved DLI.
The family members traveling with the students must also prove that they are travelling to Canada for a non-optional purpose. Here, it will be to help the student to establish himself/herself in Canada.
The students and their accompanying family members must undergo a 14-day quarantine.
The students (including minors) must have a quarantine plan before they arrive in Canada that will be up for the consideration of border officers.
During quarantine, students should make sure they have individual accommodations.
Students must constantly monitor themselves for any COVID-19 symptoms.
Students must avoid public and shared spaces and practice physical distancing.
Students must avoid contact witholder adults and people with medical conditions.
International students must confirm that they are eligible for healthcare coverage in Canada. In case they are not covered, they can get private insurance in Canada.

Students who arrive in Canada on a Canada Study visa must follow the guidelines to ensure that they are safe and eligible to do their studies in the country.

Penalties for not observing quarantine
Fine up to $750,000 6 months’ imprisonment
Non-observance of quarantine resulting in bodily harm or imminent death
Fine up to $1 million Up to 3 years’ imprisonment
