Let us examine how the points-based immigration systems of the UK and Canada differ in this article. While the UK announced the points-based system only in 2020, Canada had been successfully using it for years to issue visas for aspiring immigrants.

Let us first have a look at the points-based system in Britain.

The points-based system of the UK

As per the system implemented by the United Kingdom in 2020, individuals wanting to immigrate to it must meet certain eligibility requirements.

Applications of immigrants will be evaluated on several aspects, including their skills, educational qualifications, work experience, and English language proficiency. To be entitled to immigration, you must get at least 70 points.

Of these total points, up to 30 points are issued to candidates with English proficiency and a job offer from a UK-based employer. The offer for the job must be related to their educational qualifications. To obtain 20 points, they should fulfill the other eligibility criteria, including getting a job offer that pays a salary of £25,600 per year or securing a job in a sector where there is a shortage of manpower in the UK, or having a doctorate in a subject that is relevant to their occupation.

Another requirement that will get a potential immigrant 20 points is a doctorate in the field of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Though some aspects of the points-based system of the UK and Canada differ, there are certain similarities for a few criteria.

The immigration system of Canada

Although the immigration system of Canada grants points for niche skills or occupations, it also factors in aspects such as age, educational qualifications, work experience, age, and adaptability of immigrants applying for permanent residence (PR) in Canada.

Candidates who possess the skills mentioned above may submit their profiles under the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) through the Express Entry system. In Canada, to be eligible to apply, candidates must get a minimum of 67 points as per the following conditions.

The immigration system of Canada also grants points for special skills and occupations where there is a shortage of workers. In addition, it takes into consideration other criteria, like age, work experience, educational qualifications, and adaptability factors of talented workers who apply for PR visas in Canada.

In this North American country, language proficiency in English or French entitles them to get up to 28 points, work experience up to 15 points, educational qualifications up to 25 points, age up to 12 points, arranged Canadian employment up to 10 points, and adaptability up to 10 points.

In the case of Canada, however, there is no minimum salary threshold for potential immigrants applying under the economic class.

You may apply for any skilled occupation if you have the relevant work experience to be entitled to apply for Canada's visa through the Express Entry program. Furthermore, there are both federal and provincial migration pathways in Canada, with each having its own set of eligibility criteria. Canada offers Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) to applicants for various jobs that each province has requirements for to plug the skill shortages.

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) determines a candidate's suitability in the Express Entry pool for a skilled occupation.

As Canada's population is limited owing to its low birth rate, it has an aging workforce. Because of that, most of the job positions in the future in the country have to be filled in by immigrants. That is the reason why Canada makes jobs and visas accessible to migrants. Moreover, Canada's economy has been affected by the pandemic. To get it back on track, it also needs many immigrants with various skills belonging to different verticals.

Conclusion

On the other hand, the UK is looking to invite the best of the talent from across the world who can restore the country's past glory. The new program strives to ensure that only talented migrants secure a visa and enter its shores.

Its policy is also aimed at ending the dependence on low–skilled workers from overseas. To achieve that, it is insisting that local employers train the UK natives so that they can be absorbed in the local workforce.
