What is Canada’s Temporary Foreign Worker Program?

The IRCC and Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) collectively manage Canada's Temporary Foreign Worker Program. Canada's Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) is specifically for foreign workers seeking short-term employment in Canada. The program offers a pathway for Canadian employers to fill the country's labor shortage by recruiting foreign workers temporarily.

  • High-Wage Worker stream
  • Low-Wage Worker stream
  • Global Talent Stream (GTS)
  • Foreign Agricultural Workers
  • In-Home Caregivers

Eligibility for Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP)

The eligibility requirements for the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) are listed below:

  • Proof of employment in Canada
  • Intent to leave the country after the expiration of the work permit
  • Proof of sufficient funds
  • Proof of criminal clearance certificate
  • Proof of medical certificate
  • Approved LMIA

 

Changes made to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP)

The Employment, Workforce Development and Official Languages announced the latest measures to the (TFWP) starting from August 30, 2024.

The list of new measures is listed below:

  • Employers in the seven sectors mentioned below can continue recruiting up to 30% of the workforce in low-wage jobs through the TFWP.
  • Positions under the Territorial or provincial minimum wage will have an employment duration cap of two years.
  • The validity of the LMIA will be reduced from 18 months to 12 months.
  • Starting from January 1, 2024, employers are required to conduct annual reviews of the wages of foreign workers.
