Good news from Canada for current and former PGWP (Post Graduate Work Permit) holders. If you are holding a PGWP that expires between September 20, 2021, and December 31, 2022 (inclusive). You are eligible to apply for a Canada open work permit once. This is your opportunity to work in Canada.

The validity of this one-time open work permit is up to 18 months. You have time till December 31, 2022, to apply for this permit. Remember that you can’t apply for this permit at the port of entry in Canada.

You can apply from outside Canada. Applicants that are part of the TR2PR (Temporary Resident to Permanent Resident) pathways whose Canada PR application hasn’t yet been finalized are also allowed to apply for a Canada open work permit.

This new measure is rolled out to accommodate CEC candidates who didn’t get the opportunity to apply for Canada immigration since September 2021, through Express Entry.

Who’s eligible to apply for the permit?

For eligibility to apply for this Canada open work permit, you must meet the requirements given below:

• Your PGWP must have expired or will expire between September 20, 2021, and December 31, 2022 (inclusive).
• You must specify in your application that you are filing one for an open work permit under this public policy.
• You must have a valid passport.
  • If your PGWP has expired, the issuance of the work permit will be done for not more than 18 months from the date of approval of your application or till the date your passport expires, whichever comes first.
  • If you want to maximize the open work permit’s duration, you must make sure that your passport has a validity of at least 18 months remaining from the date of approval of your application.

The steps involved in the application process

Step 1: Ensure that you have the things required ready with you

To lodge an application online, you need

• a scanner/camera to create electronic copies of your documents
• a valid credit/debit card

Step 2: Read the instruction guide

It’s necessary for you to read the instruction guide before you complete your application.

After getting your document checklist, you must fill out the application form. The guide will help you understand how to complete each field on the application form.

Special instructions

At the time of filling out the application form for the work permit

• Select “Open Work Permit” as the type of work permit you are applying for in the section named “Details of intended work in Canada”.
• Copy and paste “PGWP PP open” in the space for “Job title”.
• Copy and paste “Open work permit” in the field named “Brief description of duties”.

Step 3: Pay your fees

You have an exemption from paying the open work permit holder fee of CAD100.

However, you have to pay the

• processing fee of CAD155 for a work permit
• biometric fee, in case you must submit biometrics

You must pay your fees before you file the application online. After you pay your fee, you should keep a copy of the receipt. The receipt copy will be necessary when you have to upload it at the time of applying for your work permit online.

You must have an account to apply online. You can use your account to

• submit your application forms
• pay your fees
• check your status

You have to answer some questions to create a document checklist that’s personalized.

You must include the documents listed in your application. This includes

• a letter that says you are applying for a Canada open work permit under the public policy for the issuance of an open work permit to current or former PGWP holders
• a copy of your receipt for fees paid

You can upload a blank document in case you are required to upload

• letter from current employer
• employment reference letter
• employment contract
• CV/resume
• employment records
• proof of having met the requirements of the job offered
