New Changes to the Canadian Immigration System

Canada is set to implement new rules and regulations in its immigration system. New rules will apply to work visas and permits from November 1, 2024. The changes have been announced to address the recent inflow of international students, temporary residents, and foreign workers to the country. The Immigration Levels Plan for the coming three years (2025-27) will also be declared in November.

Key changes Announced to the Canada Work permits

Some of the major changes that will come into effect starting in November are listed below:  

 

  • Candidates submitting PGWP applications on or after November 1, 2024, must meet the minimum language proficiency requirements (English/French)
  • University graduates must score at least CLB Level 7, while college graduates need to score CLB 5  
  • The latest Immigration Levels Plan for 2025-27 will be released by November 1, 2024.
  • The total number of temporary residents in Canada is expected to come down to 5% as per the changes in the new Immigration Levels Plan.
  • The issuance of Spousal open work permits (SOWP) will be restricted starting next year (2025).
  • Spouses of those in industries with labor shortages and highly specialized and skilled workers (engineers, lawyers, executives, scientists) will be prioritized for the SOWPs.
  • Spouses of workers employed in healthcare and construction sectors will continue to be eligible for Canadian work permits.
