Eligibility Criteria to apply for a Super visa

IRCC previously only allowed Canadian Providers to be accepted by Super visa eligibility. But now, parents and grandparents can obtain health insurance from non-Canadian insurance companies to meet the proof of insurance requirements. For a non-Canadian Health Insurance provider to provide Health Insurance coverage, it must fulfill the Super visa requirements such as:

  • Be permitted by the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI), under the Insurance Companies Act, to provide accident and sickness insurance.
  • Be listed on the OSFI list of federally regulated financial Institutions.
  • It must include statements that the document was issued or made during its insurance business in Canada.

*Note: Insurance claim administrations and Brokers will not appear on the OSFI list as they are not insurance companies.

Requirements of Super Visa Health Insurance Plan

A Canadian or non-Canadian Health Insurance Plan must have:

  • Validity period of minimum 1 year
  • Insurance deposit either paid in whole or in instalments
  • Cover services like healthcare, hospitalization, and repatriation;
  • Have sufficient Health coverage of at least $100,000.

Newcomers entering Canada on a super visa must show proof of sufficient funds from an insurance plan to a border service officer while entering Canada.
