Here’s how Canada performed in September 2020 in terms of the number of PRs the country received. The latest IRCC data reveals a slow progression of immigration Canada is registering due to the COVID-19 crisis.
Canada PR statistics | |
2020 | 2019 |
15,025 new immigrants in September 2020 | 35,000 new immigrants in September 2019 |
143,500 new immigrants between January and September 2020 | 264,000 new immigrants between January and September 2019 |
Just before COVID-19 preventive measures were implemented in Canada on March 18, 2020, and borders were closed Marco Mendicino, the Canadian Immigration Minister stated that Canada had set a target of 341,000 new immigrants in 2020. But achieving this seems impossible due to obvious reasons.
Why a target of 341,000 new immigrants is a hard target for Canada | ||
Pandemic woes | Expired COPR | Travel Restrictions |
Social distancing and quarantine measures have made it difficult to complete tests like CELPIP and IELTS,submitting biometrics, and receiving Canadian visas. | Thousands of COPR holders exempt from Canada’s travel restrictions are stuck abroad as their COPRs have expired due to the COVID-19 pandemic. | Even those who have got their COPR visas after March 18, 2020, are unable to enter Canada unless they come under a category that has exemptions. |
Canada is gearing up to meet increased immigration targets in the coming days after the COVID-19 pandemic subsides. This move is to compensate for the fall in the number of new immigrants this year.
2021-2023 Immigration Levels Plan |
400,000 new immigrants per year |
Canada has been conducting Express Entry bi-weekly draws consistently through the pandemic period in an effort to meet the Levels goal. High numbers of invites coming to 4,500 have been issued in each of the recent draws. The candidates have beeninvitedto apply for a Canada PR visa.
The same zeal to find new skilled immigrants in huge numbers has been shown in holding PNP draws. In October 2020, Canadian provinces have issued close to 3,000 provincial nominations.
Despite all the challenges Canada immigration is facing from the COVID-19 pandemic, the country is doing a good job at immigration. Language tests like CELPIP and IELTS are available, and ECA organizations like WES are operational. Those who receive COPR could enter Canada as soon as travel restrictions get modified or removed. This will be possible with the widespread distribution of COVID-19 vaccines.
