A positive trend has come out in Canada immigration as observed by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). A significant increase in the number of people entering Canada via air and land borders with the US, even after restrictions have been implemented due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The number of international travelers arriving at airports in Canada increased to 30,000 per week in the second half of June 2020. The average number of such travelers a week in April and May 2020 was 15,000 including US flights to Canada.
Around 135,000 people have arrived on international flights in Canada since May 25, 2020, as per CBSA’s immigration Canada statistics. Of these people, 66,000 were neither permanent residents nor Canadian citizens.
The number of people crossing the US-Canada border via land has increased to 170,000 a week in the second half of June 2020. In April 2020 and May 2020, this number was 115,000, including non-commercial and commercial traffic.
Canada is increasing the number of public health officials at airports so that the screening for COVID-19 can be done effectively.
From March 18, 2020, Canada had closed its borders to other countries including the US. Since then only Canada’s permanent residents, citizens, and those registered under the Indian Act and protected persons are allowed to enter Canada.

In June 2020, a further exemption was allowed to immediate family members of permanent residents and citizens. They were permitted to travel to Canada, provided they stay in Canada for at least 15 days.
A 14-day quarantine is imposed on anyone who arrives in Canada. They are also obliged to give an acceptable plan for quarantine to Canada Border Services Agency officers on arrival.
