Canada has made a big announcement for Hong Kong residents. The country has announced a new open work permit and 2 new pathways to Canada PR specifically targeting Hong Kong residents.
China’s National Security Law, which has been imposed on the people of Hong Kong people has triggered this move by Canada.
Canada is stepping up existing Canada immigration programs to help people from Hong Kong who are already in Canada to stay back, and those who want to migrate to Canada once the COVID-19 related travel restrictions are removed. |
Canada has reaffirmed its commitment to democracy and human rights with this new decision. Marco Mendicino, Canada’s Immigration Minister has assured continued support for the people of Hong Kong in the same spirit. He remembers and reiterates how the people-to-people relations between Canada and Hong Kong are strong and how newcomers from Hong Kong have made outstanding contributions to Canada.
Open Work Permit |

3 year validity | For students who have done a study in Canada and completed post-secondary education in the country in the last 5 years. | Spouses, dependent children, and common-law partners will also be eligible for a Canada work permit or Canada study permit. |
New Canada PR Pathways | |
Pathway for former Hong Kong residents who have at least a year’s work experience in Canada and meet essential education and language criteria. | Pathway for graduates of a post-secondary institution in Canada, letting them submit a direct application for Canadian PR. |
Spouses, dependent children, and common-law partners are included in both pathways. |
Canada will speed up the processing of work and study permits for young people from Hong Kong. Hong Kong residents in Canada will also be given a waiver on processing fees on a temporary basis applying to prolong their stay in the country.
