British Columbia is a province that has played a remarkable role in the Canada immigration scene. The province attracts immigrants from the world over, especially from Asia. With a very low unemployment rate, BC is an ideal destination for skilled workers as they are in high demand there.

It’s also a province that's well-known for its provincial Express Entry draws that brings in so many skilled and eligible people to the region. In fact, immigration Canada sources a large chunk of the workforce in the province.  The major sectors these workers are taken into are retail/service and construction.

On April 16, 2020, a British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BC PNP) draw was conducted. In the draw, 271 candidates were selected. These candidates from the Express Entry BC stream and the Skilled Immigration were sent invites. The invites are to apply for a provincial nomination for permanent residence.

The effect of COVID-19 was felt even in this draw. It was notable that candidates in 34 job categories were left out in the draw. Some of these excluded jobs were:

  • Chefs
  • Cooks
  • Administrative officers
  • Retail salespersons
  • Travel counselors
  • Hotel front desk clerks
  • Cashiers
  • Bartenders
  • Hairstylists and barbers

The provincial score required depended on the subcategory that candidates belonged to.

Under the Express Entry BC stream, candidates were chosen from among those who had profiles in the federal Express Entry pool. These candidates were invited via the International Graduate and Express Entry BC Skilled Worker sub-categories. The least provincial score required were 102 and 105, respectively.

Under the Skills Immigration stream, candidates were invited from sub-categories of International Graduate, Skilled Worker, and Entry Level and Semi-Skilled. The minimum score required for these candidates was 100 for the first two sub-categories and 85 for the Entry Level and Semi-Skilled candidates.

Candidates who have got an invitation to apply now can submit a complete application to the BC PNP for provincial nomination within 30 days. This will be counted from the day they receive their invitation.
