Highlights: US extends work permit validity for Green card applicants!

• USCIS announced the extension of the validity of Employment Authorization Documents (EAD) for Green card applicants.
• EADs are now valid for a maximum period of five years.
• The newly announced extension is valid for initial applications as well as renewals.
• As per reports, around 1.05 million Indians are currently awaiting Employment-based Green cards.

Categories eligible for US work permit extension

The extension of the US work permit mainly targets non-citizens under three different categories. Candidates belonging to the categories listed below are eligible for the work permit extensions:

• Individuals seeking asylum
• Individuals looking to adjust their status via the INA 245
• Individuals involved in cancellation of removal or suspension of deportation.

 The duration of the Employment Authorization Documents (EAD) depends on three major factors:

• The underlying status of the individual
• Other specific circumstances
• The category under which the EAD was filed.
