Australia Announces New English Language Requirements

The government of Australia announced new English language requirements for Temporary graduate visas and student visas. The change was introduced as a part of the Migration Strategy released in 2023. The Migration Strategy emphasizes bringing in new reforms for student visas and supporting international students to have an excellent educational experience in Australia.

The latest revisions apply to TGV and student visa applications submitted on or after March 23, 2024.

Subclass 485: Temporary Graduate Visa

The list of updated requirements for Subclass 485 is given below:

• The IELTS score required has been raised from 6.0 to 6.5 (or its equivalent), with a minimum score of 5.5 for each testing component. [Reading, writing, speaking, listening]
• The validity of the test for TGV is now decreased from 3 years to 1 year.
• Applicants are required to submit evidence of English language test completion within 12 months before the application date.

Australia Student visa

The list of updated requirements for a student visa is given below:

• The IELTS score required has increased from 5.5 to 6.0 (Or its equivalent)
• The minimum score required for ELICOS from IELTS has been raised from 4.5 to 5.0.
• No charges will be applicable for students already studying English through ELICOS.
• IELTS 5.5 will be the score required for students taking up pathway programs or university foundation programs that offer IELTS training.
