Top 4 countries looking to hire highly skilled workers

Highly skilled foreign workers are currently one of the most in-demand professionals in the world. Some of the top countries in the world are looking to retain highly skilled talent that can contribute to the growth of their economy.

 

The top four countries that have taken measures to employ talent are as follows:

 

Canada

One out of four people in Canada are said to be immigrants, which forms a large percentage among the seven nations. Canada issued 128,574 work permits across three different categories in 2023 so far.  

 

Some of the immigration pathways offered by Canada to attract foreign talent are as follows:

  • International Mobility Program: The International Mobility Program extends more visas for digital nomads.
  • Start-up visa: Canada’s Start-up visa (SUV) offers work permits to eligible candidates for up to 3 years, qualifying them for an ‘open’ work permit.
  • Work permits for H-1B visa holders: Canada offered work permits to H-1B visa holders in Mexico with a cap of 10,000 applications in 24 hours.
  • Canada Tech Talent Strategy: The Tech Talent Strategy of Canada offers a PR pathway for techies.

Australia

Australia introduced a new “Skills in Demand” visa to tackle the skills gaps and promote worker mobility within the labor market. The visa comes with a validity of four years wherein eligible candidates can apply for permanent residence.

 

The Skills in Demand visa will replace the existing Temporary Skills Shortage (Subclass 482) visa by offering the three different pathways mentioned below:

  • Specialist skills
  • Core skills
  • Essential skills

Germany

Germany took the initiative to address the growing need for skilled workers by relaxing the entry requirements for non-EU nationals with the required skill set. The government plans to upgrade the process of issuing visas while easing other policies to attract more foreign talent.

Germany’s Opportunity Card is a great opportunity for foreign workers to help find work in Germany. It maintains a points-based system and allows candidates with university degrees to look for jobs in the country for a year.

 

The points are assigned based on the following criteria:

  • Proficiency in German or English
  • Connections in Germany
  • Partners or spouses accompanying them in the German labor Market.

UK  

The United Kingdom follows a points-based system to select candidates who wish to work in the UK, starting in the spring of 2024. The government also plans on introducing a high salary as a pre-requisite for acquiring a job offer.

The new salary requirement is set at £38,700 which is 50% more than the ongoing £26,200 salary rate. The UK government also plans to increase the minimum income requirement to £29,000 to qualify for Family visas.
