On May 5, 2021, Alberta issued invitations to Express Entry candidates. They had a score of 300 to apply for a provincial nomination.
It wasn’t the largest draw of 2021. 250 immigration candidates received invitations. 300 invitations is the record number of invitations sent in 2021. However, the CRS score required from the candidates for selection was the lowest since May 2020.
In case the invited candidates are deemed eligible for provincial nomination via the Alberta Express Entry stream, it’s sure that they will receive an extra 600 CRS points that add up to their overall score that is assigned to them by the Express Entry system. After achieving that, they will have the opportunity to be invited to apply for Canada PR.
The AINP operates the PNPs for immigrants who are bound for Alberta.
The Alberta Express Entry stream is a PNP that’s enhanced. It means that it selects candidates from the Express Entry pool.
To become eligible for this program a candidate has to firstly get a profile in the Express Entry system’s candidate pool.
About the Express Entry system
Express Entry is an application management system meant to function for the 3 federal programs for highly skilled immigration candidates. These federal programs are CEC, FSWP, and FSTP.
If a candidate is eligible for Express Entry, he/she will be assigned a score based on the CRS. The CRS awards its points for factors such as a candidate’s education, age, language ability in English/French, and work experience.
IRCC regularly conducts Express Entry draws. The country invites candidates with the highest scores to apply for Canada PR.
It's possible to immigrate via the Express Entry system even when a candidate doesn’t have a provincial nomination. But those who got lower CRS scores could choose a PNP for Canada immigration.
Provincial nominees get 600 extra CRS points to their overall score. If the lowest-scoring candidates in the new Alberta draw got the nomination, 900 will be their new CRS score. This will be more than enough for getting an invite when an upcoming Express Entry draw is held
The Alberta Express Entry Stream
The Alberta Express Entry Stream is designed for Express Entry candidates with strong connections in Alberta. The provincial government also uses it to support its economic development and meet its priorities for diversification.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Alberta is sticking to selecting only candidates who are currently living and working in the province.
Candidates must have work experience in a job deemed eligible. The AINP doesn’t give a list of eligible jobs. Instead, it offers a list of jobs that aren’t eligible for the stream.
Alberta had permission to issue 6,250 certificates of nomination in 2020. But due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the province brought down their allocation for nominations to 4,000. These nominations were all issued by June 2020. That’s why there were no immigration draws for the second half of 2020.
Alberta PNP hasn’t released the number of allocations for provincial nominations for Alberta in 2021 yet.
