The latest report from DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) shows how educational institutions in Germany are attracting a large number of foreigners to study in Germany. In the latest report, DAAD reveals that in the winter semester of 2021-22, 350,000 foreign students in Germany were enrolled in German universities and colleges.
This has set a new record and the spotlight is now on the German education system. With the new record number of enrolments of international students, Germany has entered into the list of the top four countries in this regard. The other countries that are placed above Germany on the list are the USA, the UK, and Australia.
The countries from where the largest number of international students originated in 2021 to study in Germany are the following:

The fact is that German educational institutions are highly reputed among international students. These include German universities, colleges, and research institutions. This was reaffirmed in a statement given by Bettina Stark-Watzinger, the Federal Education Minister of Germany.
“International students represent an enormous potential of skilled workers, which we should exploit even better in the future. It also shows that Germany has come through the Corona period comparatively well in terms of the number of international students,” |

The President of DAAD, Professor Joybrato Mukherjee reiterated how Germany has succeeded in maintaining its global reputation among international students through the years. According to her, Germany’s best efforts to maintain and improve its quality of education have borne fruit with spectacular results.
“This also represents a huge opportunity for discussion regarding our domestic shortage of skilled labor, and all those concerned should unite in exploiting this opportunity,” |

The improvement in enrolments in German institutions is highly commendable. Since the winter semester of 2010-11, there has been an 89 percent increase in the number of foreign students in Germany who enrolled in German universities and colleges. Most of these students were interested in mathematics, engineering, and natural sciences. As pointed out by Monika Jungbauer-Gans, the Scientific Director of the DZHW, 53 percent of international students chose to pursue a study program in one of these subjects.
