You may be one of many who are in the healthcare industry working as a nurse. If you are interested in working in Canada, where professionals like you are in high demand, we can help you understand how to go about it and get employed as a nurse in Canada.

The scope of work in Canada for nurses

The forecast of a shortage of 36,500 nurses from 2019 through 2028 was made by Ottawa’s Job Bank employment website even before the COVID-19 pandemic started. It’s a fact that the shortage is even more now. There are over 19,200 job listings for nurses in Canada on indeed.ca, a major job search website in Canada, in early February. When it comes to earnings, a nurse in Nunavut can earn $169,045 as the median annual wage based on a 37.5-hour workweek. Across Canada, the median annual wage for nurses is $78,000. This is based on that standard workweek. Foreign nationals who qualify to work as nurses in Canada can employ their expertise to search for jobs and obtain a Canada PR visa via various economic immigration programs available at the provincial as well as federal levels. These include the Canada Express Entry system, the Quebec Skilled Worker program in Quebec, and one of the PNP. Nurses are often able to qualify for the FSWP via the Canada Express Entry system. For this, their CRS profile scores must be high enough. Another way for nurses to qualify to work in Canada via Quebec’s Skilled Worker program is when they score at least 50 points on the province’s selection grid. The following skilled workers in nursing are welcome in Canada:

  • Registered nurses with a university degree in nursing
  • Licensed practical nurses
  • Registered psychiatric nurses with bachelor’s/PG degree in psychiatric nursing
  • Registered practical nurses in Ontario holding post-secondary diplomas in nursing

Credentials check for foreign nurses to work in Canada

Nurses intending to immigrate to work in Canada must first have their academic credentials evaluated. This is done to check whether they match Canadian standards. The Government of Canada recognizes 5 organizations tasked with assessing foreign educational credentials. They are:

  • ICAS - International Credential Assessment Service of Canada
  • WES - World Education Services
  • ICES - International Credential Evaluation Service
  • IQAS - International Qualifications Assessment Service
  • CES - Comparative Education Service

The procedure

Upon getting the education and background checks done, the potential immigrant must get their nursing credentials recognized in Canada. Such recognitions will be provided by the NNAS. This process costs US$650. Then, they must create a profile on the NNAS application page. For that they must:

  • Submit 2 pieces of identity that are notarized, along with copies of original documents. Those documents must be signed, dated, and stamped
  • Download a nursing education form from the website, that has to be completely filled out. It must be signed before being sent to the school where the applicant had learned to become a nurse. That form will be completed by the school’s officials. After that, it will be sent directly to NNAS. The course curriculum, academic records/transcripts, course syllabi, and course syllabi will accompany the completed form.
  • Submit the form for nursing registration to the nursing licensing authority. That is where the nurse is registered currently in the applicant’s home country.
  • Sign and send the nursing practice/employment form to all employers where the nurse has served during the past 5 years. They can complete the form and send it to NNAS.
  • Send the applicant’s IELTS language testing results directly to NNAS from an approved organization/company for language testing.
