Canada’s Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP)

IRCC reveals a spike of 3.7% growth of immigration through the Parents and Grandparents Program, welcoming around 28,280 parents and grandparents towards the end of December 2023. In 2023, the overall immigration in Canada saw a new record, with a 7.8% hike. 


Ontario alone welcomed 13,345 parents and grandparents, contributing significantly to Canada's overall immigration growth. Other provinces like British Columbia and Manitoba issued high PRs next to Ontario. 

A total of 471,550 new Canadian PRs were issued in 2023.

Canada to welcome 1.5 million immigrants by 2026

The IRCC recently released the latest Immigration Levels Plan for Canada. As per the new plan, the country aims to welcome 1.5 Million immigrants by 2026. The Immigration Levels Plan of 2024-2026 is to invite 485,000 new Canada PRs in 2024 and 500,000 immigrants in 2025 and 2026.

Canada PGP application procedure

The following points should be kept in mind while sponsoring your family under the PGP: 

  • Applicants are required to pay $1050 as fees to sponsor a parent or grandparent via the PGP program. 
  • It takes around 23 months for the application to be processed.
  • The beneficiary needs to submit their biometrics as the next step.
  • An Invitation to Apply (ITA) will be sent to the PR holder who wishes to sponsor the relative.
  • The sponsor is to submit two applications; one is the sponsorship application, and the other is the application for Permanent Residency.

 

Eligibility Criteria for Canada PGP

You would be eligible to sponsor your family under Canada PGP if:  

  • You are at least 18 years old or above.
  • You are a Canadian Citizen or hold a Canada PR.
  • You have enough funds to support your parent or grandparent. 
  • You have proof of income. 
  • You fulfil all other requirements as set by the IRCC.
  • You receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA).

Factors that make you ineligible for PGP sponsorship 

You would be ineligible to sponsor your family under Canada PGP if: 

  • You are serving as a prisoner in a jail. 
  • You failed to pay back a performance bond or an immigration loan 
  • You did not pay the court-ordered family support funds like alimony or child support. 
  • You could not provide financial support to a beneficiary with whom you had entered into a sponsorship agreement. 
  • You were declared bankrupt and not discharged yet. 
  • You are currently receiving social assistance for reasons other than a disability. 
  • You were charged with a criminal offence in Canada or outside the country. 
  • You were issued a removal order and cannot legally reside in the country.

IRCC urges candidates to stay up-to-date

The IRCC typically requests the following documents from the candidates being sponsored:

  • Biometrics
  • Criminal clearance certificate 
  • Health certificate and medical exam results

IRCC urges all applicants to provide up-to-date information. 

The following information provided should be current and accurate:

  • Status change of relationships
  • Birth or adoption of a child
  • Death of a dependent or an applicant
  • Contact information like e-mail address and phone numbers.
