Portugal Witnesses a Record 1.4 Million Citizenship Applications in the last 6 years

The total number of Portugal citizenship applications submitted over 6 years has increased by 366%. Around 1.4 million people have registered for Portuguese citizenship over the last 6 years by 4 times. The record number of citizenship applications indicates a growing interest amongst foreign nationals who are looking to become citizens of Portugal. In 2022, Portugal received 300,000 citizenship requests, whereas in 2023, a record number of 230,000 citizenship applications were submitted.

Increased Processing Times for Portugal Citizenship Applications

The Institute of Registries and Notaries (IRN) has created a new platform to manage the processing time of Portuguese citizenship applications. Currently, the department is processing urgent or priority citizenship applications submitted in the second half of October 2024. Considering the ongoing demand for Portuguese citizenship and the increasing volume of applications, processing Portuguese citizenship applications may take over 2 years.
